Sewing is a wonderful hobby for children because it teaches patience, persistence and creative problem solving, but these come with years of enjoying this hobby. We’d ask you to be fair in the expectation of skill from a 10 year old, who made the pencil case 6 months ago and possibly hasn’t practiced in between. We used the exact same pattern to make the bags as the one in the photo - except the straps are made wider (easier) for children and not attached with buttons (years of teaching this class has shown that children do not have the patience to hand sew on 8 buttons). It is very common for children to refuse to resew sections, or unpick and redo in class, which to be fair is understandable - 5 hours making a bag is amazing attention for a child. In our school holiday classes we do not force them to do anything they don’t want to and they often won’t repair their work - from our point of view it’s a holiday class and it is their creation.
