Description

Thread Den's pattern drafting program is designed to enable you to be creating and producing garments designed by you. Learning to pattern draft will open up a world of unique style and creativity that you will have for a lifetime.

Our program is made up of individual courses: 

  1. The Skirt - six week course - next in 2019
  2. The Bodice- next in January 2019
  3. The Torso - next in 2019

Bodice designs stop like a shirt, Torso drafting includes full garments like dresses and jumpsuits.


Delivered and designed by My Best Friend Jen, our workshops are social and designed for modern guys and girls who want to develop a creative passion. Our pattern drafting program is ideal for individuals who have been sewing from commercial sewing patterns, understand the pattern markings and have a grasp on sewing terminology.  The workshop schedule for each includes pattern drafting lessons, not sewing sessions. To make the most of your course, you want to allow for time to make toiles of your drafted patterns.

Over the 21 hour course students will:

  • Draft and fit a bodice block to your own measurements
  • Learn about darts
  • Draft princess seams
  • Create different sleeve styles
  • Enhance designs with different pockets, zips, other closures, necklines, facings and more

We utilise a number of techniques; working on calico, pattern paper, cardboard, full size and in third size scale. You will build up a reference tool that you will have for a lifetime of pattern drafting.

Parking Info
  • Level 1, 329 Brunswick St, Fitzroy. Look for the red door.
  • Most Brunswick St parking is ticketed & max' 2hrs. However, longer time parking is available in the paid Coles Car Park.
  • Public Transport is the ideal way to get here - jump on the 11 tram & get off at Johnston St.

What to bring
  • For toiles, students will need calico

Refund & Cancellation Policy

Refunding Your Booking

  • All refunds are subject to a 25% administration fee.
  • Refunds will only be processed back to the original method of payment.
  • Refunds are processed as soon as practicable. While Thread Den’s part of the process should be undertaken within three days of notice, the combination of the bookings platform and your banking institution’s processes will also influence the exact amount of time taken for you to receive the refund.

Cancelling Your Booking

  • If you no longer wish to attend a workshop, we require notice at least 24 hours or more prior to commencement. It is essential that you receive acknowledgment from us as well.
  • The Refund Policy will be applied.
  • No refund, transfer or credit will be supplied if you have made a cancellation request the day before, the day of, or any time after a course start.

Transferring Your Booking

  • If you wish to transfer your booking to another workshop we require at least fourteen days notice prior to the start date of your original booking.
  • Bookings without date changes can be transferred to another person without incurring any penalties.
  • Changes to your workshop, or the commencement date (within all other terms) will incur a $10 administration fee.
  • Changes to your booking date will not reset the fourteen day notice period.

If you feel unwell, do not attend your workshop. With supply of a medical certificate or COVID-19 testing referral covering the date of your workshop you will be able to transfer your booking without incurring any penalties.

Medical Events

  • Your safety is our priority, we reserve the right to make decisions if necessary to preserve the safety of all. 
  • If you feel unwell, do not attend your workshop. With supply of a medical certificate or copy of a COVID-19 testing referral you will be able to transfer your booking without incurring any penalties.
  • In the event of a medical emergency we may have to seek ambulance services on your behalf and at your expense.

Course Cancellations 

  • Classes are subject to sufficient enrolment numbers.
  • We reserve the right to cancel any scheduled course. In the event of a cancellation, students will be notified two days before the scheduled start date and refunds will be provided.

A most informative course, which set out pattern drafting in a way that can be easily understood. Plenty of resources on offer to assist with developing knowledge and confidence. I am very happy with my fitted bodice block which I can use to draft my own dresses and blouses, or as a base for other patterns to ensure a perfect fit. I look forward to the next part of the pattern drafting trilogy offered by Thread Den.

Great class! I learnt how to draft and manipulate a bodice pattern. I was able to draft my own design and get help on how to make it work and fit my body.

This class was 7 Thursday evenings long and covered shirt drafting in depth. I came away with my own bodice block that I can manipulate to create any sort of shirt or blouse, including the cuffs and the collars so that anything I make from the block is exactly my size. And even if I change measurements, I now know how to adjust the block for this.
