Shift Dress Workshop

Pattern Design: Simple, sweet, and looks a treat! Perfect for any season. In cooler weather, make a larger size allowing for thick tights and a turtle neck underneath. When it's warmer, keep it light and simple.

A Shift dress falls straight from the shoulders, with the bottom being wider than the top, it will actually shift on the frame as worn. A shift has no defined waist and with it’s limited detailing and only a few pattern pieces it is a great project for beginners. Round neck and sleeveless, with facings to finish neck and armholes. The back closes with an invisible zip. Choose your length – short and sassy, or practically modest. While sewing yourself a shift dress, you’ll learn some important dressmaking steps – see the skills checklist below.

For fabric and styling Inspiration - click here.

Our patterns cover bust measurements from 88cm to 108cm. Please email us if your measurements is outside this range and we will grade a pattern ready for your workshop.

Photographed Sample: Our simple little shift has been made out of a cute love heart repeating print cotton perfect for Summer.

Notes on supplies: A shift dress works in a wide variety of fabrics.  Consider; cotton lawn and rayon (for its beautiful drape), linen will also look lovely (but it will crease), for heavier weights look at cotton drill, chambray. For warmth try wool and wool blends. Cotton Sateen will give a small amount of stretch if you want a fitted shift. This pattern is not suitable for knit fabrics. As the simple little shift is unlined, avoid sheer fabrics or rough/itchy textures.

This shift dress is the basis of so many dresses, with the pattern in hand you'll make many many more to build your ideal wardrobe. Ensure you select a closed end invisible zip (not the very similar light weight open ended zip). This pattern is not suitable for knit fabrics. For directional prints, large prints and fabrics with nap you should purchase extra fabric. For best results - pre-wash your fabric to reduce shrinkage.
