Description

With a maximum of six people in the workshop, your teacher will be able to show you ways to mend or alter your garment.

  • Learn how to replace buttons, hem your skirts and pants, repair torn seams...
  • Discover visible mending.  How to put on patches or use appliqué to fix your favourite jacket.
  • If you wanted to learn a specific mend (eg: a zip), but don't actually have an item in need, bring along some calico or fabric remnants and the supplies needed to do a sample and learn the process.
  • Perhaps we can extend the life of your clothes by replacing broken closures, adjusting length, adding darts for an improved fit, letting out or taking in seams...

How much you can achieve in this workshop is variable and will depend on your skills, the amount of unpicking required and the size of the mend/alter' involved.  But you will hear what your fellow students have bought and what is required for their work as well.

17 January 2020 • Alterations and Mending Workshop

I enjoyed bringing some of my projects and finding out how to approach mending them. Some were my level, some too high and I didn't bother trying! It was good that people did what they were comfortable with. Also enjoyed the chats :) Will come to another workshop or Friday Sew Social I’m sure!

Thanks Jen Was a very comfortable, community orientated get together! It was great to see everyone’s projects for alterations and also bring my own to fruition.

I am so happy that the alterations and mending workshop is back on the timetable after several years. There is always more than one way to fix or alter a garment so it is a marvelous opportunity to bounce ideas around, or to ask for assistance if I have no idea what to do. I love this class.

Hi Cathy,

Thank you for a great review. We are happy to have this one back in the timetable too. While "Make do & mend" is an old adage, it is a true one! We love the trend towards visible mending, especially when you can use techniques like Japanese Boro.
